Champagne Cattier - Explore Our Outstanding Selection
The reputation of Cattier is anchored in a passionate family history, shaping the excellence of champagne for almost 400 years. Dating back to 1625, the wine-growing roots of the ancestors of the Cattier family were already flourishing in the terroir of Chigny-les-Roses, in the heart of the Montagne de Reims. Thirteen generations have carried the torch of this tradition, passing on invaluable know-how from generation to generation.
Today, under the direction of Alexandre Cattier, representative of the thirteenth generation, and accompanied by his cousins Agathe, deputy general manager, and Marie, brand ambassador, Maison Cattier prospers. The heritage of this house is based on the work, courage and daring of the family members, all united by a common passion for wine and the land. Their only imperative is to preserve and transmit this heritage of excellence.
Maison Cattier embodies a story of passion, family commitment and dedication to preserving a heritage that spans the ages.
A Treasure Beneath Our Feet: The Cellars of Maison Cattier
The emblematic cellars of Maison Cattier, located mainly in Rilly-la-Montagne, offer a testimony of the past and an embrace in the present. With a storage capacity of 2 million bottles, these cellars, more than 150 years old, bear the scars of the Second World War, having served as a refuge during the bombings.
A maze of 119 and 136 steps respectively on each side, these cellars, among the deepest in Champagne at almost 30 meters deep, preserve an inestimable treasure. Dug on three levels and decorated with Gothic, Romanesque and Renaissance style vaults, they offer a sanctuary for the bottles to age in optimal conditions, at a constant temperature, sheltered from any external agitation.
The Brut Premier Cru from Maison Cattier benefits from more than 4 years of rest in these cellars, well beyond the 15 months required by law. As for the prestige vintages, they wait more than 8 years, allowing their most subtle and refined aromas to blossom.
The Magnificence of the Cattier Vineyards: A Classified Premier Cru Estate
In the heart of the Montagne de Reims, on the lands of Premier and Grand Crus, lies the Maison Cattier vineyard. A precious estate of 33 hectares, mainly in Chigny-les-Roses, Ludes and Rilly-la-Montagne, shaped over generations. Protecting this family jewel is a mission entrusted to a dedicated team of 10 people, working tirelessly to obtain grapes of exceptional maturity.
Clos du Moulin, an emblematic acquisition by Jean Cattier in 1950, embodies the rarity of clos in Champagne. A 2.20 hectare plot, initially fallow, was transformed after a year of attentive care. Its first harvest in 1951 gave birth to the emblematic vintage “Clos du Moulin”. Today, this vintage, the fruit of the blend of three vintages, waits more than 8 years in the cellar, each bottle numbered, to reveal all its splendor and complexity.
Rooted Responsibility: Respect and Care Given to the Vineyard
Since the mid-1990s, Maison Cattier has been committed to adopting more responsible practices in the cultivation and management of its vines. This approach was rewarded by obtaining Ampelos certification, demonstrating a commitment to working the vines while preserving the balance of fauna and flora.
This quest for environmental excellence continued with the obtaining of High Environmental Value (HVE) level 3 and Sustainable Viticulture in Champagne (VDC) certifications. These distinctions reflect Maison Cattier's unwavering commitment to preserving the environment and the sustainability of its winemaking practices.
