Champagne Michel Arnould: A Sparkling Family Tradition

The family roots of champagne winemaker Michel Arnould go deep into the Grand Cru terroir of Verzenay, where the Lefevre ancestors worked the vines at the end of the last century. After the fall in grape prices in 1929, Henri Lefevre, taking the reins of the vineyard, decided to create his own Champagne. Thus the first bottles of champagne were born in the early 1930s, marking the start of an exciting wine adventure.

André, Henri's son, invested in a vat room and a 2000 kg press, increasing the production of this sparkling wine. At the end of the Second World War, he became both a champagne winemaker and a merchant, traveling throughout France to promote the family's wines. In the 1960s, the union of his granddaughter Françoise with Michel Arnould gave birth to Champagne Michel Arnould, marking a new era. Investments in a house, one hectare of Grand Cru vines, and the expansion of facilities strengthen production capacity.

Michel Arnould, visionary, opened the doors to the international market in 1972 with a flourishing business in England. Today, Patrick, Thierry, and the new generation represented by Thomas, perpetuate this tradition of family champagne winemaker, creating authentic vintages and developing the business inherited from their elders.

Champagne Michel Arnould the Terroir Grand Cru of Verzenay

The family vineyard, extending over approximately 12 hectares, is rooted in the slopes of the Grand Cru terroir of Verzenay. The distribution of grape varieties is carefully balanced, with 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Chardonnay, cultivated with a passion that is passed down from generation to generation. The champagne vines, on average 35 years old, reveal a history that dates back to 1950, the year the oldest vine was planted.

The specificity of the cultivation of champagne vines is evident in the cordon de Royat pruning for Pinots Noirs and the Chablis pruning for Chardonnays. An environmentally friendly approach guides every step of the growing process. Certified High Environmental Value and Sustainable Viticulture of Champagne, the vineyard embodies a commitment to sustainable agricultural practices.

The Art of Cultivating Champagne Terroir: Certifications and Philosophy

For Patrick Arnould and Thierry Gibelin, vine management is an expression of the richness of Pinot Noir associated with the Grand Cru terroir of Verzenay. More than twenty years of experimentation have shaped methods of working the soil, from the return of terrestrial fauna thanks to the plow to the cessation of weedkillers and the development of sexual confusion.

The HVE and Sustainable Viticulture certification in Champagne, obtained in 2016, underlines the estate's commitment to environmental protection. More than 125 commitments, covering carbon footprint, waste management and health protection, are respected to guarantee a respectful culture.

Today, the Michel Arnould champagne estate is taking a further step towards organic cultivation, confirming its commitment to sustainable agricultural practices.
